MM

As part of the support of Marilyn’s legacy, Bungalow 42 Productions will give a portion of its film profits to several charities that relate to Marilyn and the things that she cared about during her life – Children, Animals and education and Civils Rights. Feel free to support some of the causes that Marilyn cared about during her life.

Hollygrove

charity-hollygroveIn December of 1934, Marilyn’s mother Gladys, who had long suffered from mental illness, had a complete emotional breakdown and was committed to an asylum. Her eight year old daughter, Norma Jeane Baker, was sent to live with Grace McKee, her mother’s best friend, whom Marilyn soon nicknamed “Aunt Grace”. Aunt Grace cared for the young girl for about a year until she lost her job with Columbia Pictures and could no longer afford to do so. On September 13, 1935, she was forced to bring Norma Jeane to the Los Angeles Orphans Home Society – Hollygrove’s original name – where she became the orphanage’s 3,463rd ward. Marilyn stayed at Hollygrove on and off for a period of almost two years, during which time she was also shuttled between no less than nine different foster homes. She left the orphanage for good on June 12, 1937, at which time she moved back in with Grace McKee where she remained for about a year before being shuttled off to yet another family member.

TODAY their Mission Statement:

  • help children,
  • strengthen families,
  • build community, and
  • advocate for systems change
  • to ensure that our families thrive

According to the Children’s Defense Fund, a child in California is abused or neglected every 4 minutes:

In Los Angeles County alone, 900,000 children live in poverty. Of the 100,000 foster children in California, 35,000 are in LA County. Public funding does not cover the complex needs of abused and at-risk children and families. For 127 years, Hollygrove has been dedicated to helping children and families achieve permanency and well-being.

charity-anndouglasLA Mission/Anne Douglas Women’s Center

The Los Angeles Mission’s Women’s outreach was named the Anne Douglas Center for Women in recognition of Mrs. Kirk Douglas’ long-standing compassionate generosity to the homeless.

Women arrive at our door shattered, drained of emotions, suicidal, alone…and in desperate need of help. Their lives are filled with incidents of physical, sexual and emotional abuse that have left a wake of broken family relationships and chaos. Tired and no longer able to manage their own lives, they are seeking a way to make a change. At the Anne Douglas Center, they are welcomed and offered the chance to transform their lives and regain their dignity.

“If I had but one wish, I think becoming a recognized patron of homeless men and women would be it. I hope together we will be able to alleviate their plight entirely.”
– Anne Douglas
